I was honored to know him and to see firsthand the fairness and compassion with which he served. His influence on our state, and the dignity of his example, will be deeply missed.”   “My thoughts and prayers are with his daughter, Superior Court Justice Kristin E. WASHINGTON – U.S. Congressman David N. Cicilline (RI-01) released the following statement today after the Trump administration announced its new plan to kick more than 650,000 Americans, including approximately 7,300 Rhode Islanders off their Supplemental Nutrition Assistant Program benefits by tightening work requirements for some recipients:   “This administration has proven time and time again that they will say they are for working families and seniors while simultaneously trying to undermine programs they rely on to get by. Now they’ve stooped so low that they’re trying to kick hundreds of thousands of folks off their SNAP benefits as we head into the holiday season.”

WASHINGTON – The House of Representatives passed bipartisan legislation today introduced by U.S. Congressman David N. Cicilline (RI-01), the AMIGOS Act (H.R. 565), to increase trade and investment ties between Portugal and the United States by making Portuguese nationals eligible for E-1 and E-2 nonimmigrant visas. H.R. 565, which will make it easier for Portugal and the United States to do business with one another, now heads to the Senate.

WASHINGTON - Democratic Policy and Communications Committee (DPCC) Chair David N. Cicilline (RI-01), a member of the House Judiciary Committee, issued the following statement tonight:   “Judge Jackson’s ruling makes clear that no one is above the law, not even the President of the United States, and that witnesses must comply with subpoenas issued by Congress in connection with an impeachment inquiry.”   “The Court completely rejected the Administration’s position that officials may claim ‘absolute immunity’ and refuse to testify before Congress. Further, the Court agreed with counsel for the Judiciary Committee, finding no basis in the law for such a claim and ordering the witness to comply with the subpoena.”

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Senate today passed legislation to honor Elizabeth Buffum Chace, a 19th century Rhode Island abolitionist, by renaming the U.S. Post Office located at 575 Dexter Street in Central Falls. U.S. Congressmen David N. Cicilline (RI-01) and James Langevin (RI-02) introduced the proposal, H.R. 2451, which the U.S. House passed last month. It now awaits the President’s signature.   “The unanimous support for Elizabeth Buffum Chace from both chambers of Congress is a testament to her life of service and tremendous legacy that lives on to this day,” Cicilline said. “I thank Mayor Diossa and my colleagues in Congress for recognizing the importance of this legislation. I look forward to seeing it signed into law.”

Cicilline (RI-01) released the following statement today after the House Judiciary Committee unanimously passed his bipartisan bill to drive down the costs of prescription drugs, the Affordable Prescriptions for Patients Through Promoting Competition Act of 2019 (H.R. 5133): “Soaring prescription drug costs are ruining lives and bankrupting families. It’s long past time to stand up to the big pharmaceutical corporations and their CEOs.” “This bipartisan legislation ends abusive delay tactics and will save taxpayers and patients hundreds of millions of dollars in the process. I thank Chairman Nadler for joining me in this effort. I look forward to sending this bill to the Senate, which should take it up without delay.   -30-

WASHINGTON – House Antitrust Subcommittee Chair David N. Cicilline (RI-01) and Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (NY-10) introduced The Affordable Prescriptions for Patients Through Promoting Competition Act of 2019 (H.R. 5133) today to prohibit pharmaceutical companies from engaging in anticompetitive “product hopping.” The bill is scheduled to be marked up in the Judiciary Committee on Wednesday.

WASHINGTON – U.S. Congressman David N. Cicilline (RI-01) introduced legislation today to establish Rhode Island and surrounding counties in Massachusetts and Connecticut as a federal regional commission. The Southern New England Regional Commission Act, which Cicilline introduced with Congressman Joseph P. Kennedy III (MA-03), will allow jurisdictions at different levels to work together with federal support to strengthen the area’s economy.

Cicilline (RI-01) issued the following statement today after voting to pass the United States Export Finance Agency Act (H.R.4863):   “The Export-Import Bank creates and supports jobs in Rhode Island and all across America. It’s a critical agency for small businesses that can’t get access to private loans. The bill we are passing today will ensure that the Ex-Im Bank continues serving American job creators for years to come. This bill increases the Bank’s lending authority by $40 billion, expands outreach efforts to small business owners, and increases the percentage of lending for small businesses from 25% to 30% of the total lending volume.”
